It's pretty common for there to be an active "core" - sometimes it's one person, sometimes it's most of the group, often it's somewhere in between. It's also interesting how proximity, (at least occasional) face-to-face contact, and "multi-threaded" connections (e.g. group members share several interests rather than just one) affect online group dynamics.
