Moab

I spent last Thursday and Friday around Moab with my dad. We headed into Arches late Thursday afternoon. It was a beautiful, clear day, and we could even see the Sierra La Sals behind the redrock, with a bit of fog at their base.

We were planning to camp out, but my dad's favorite campsite was covered with snow, so we stayed in a hotel in town (which had free wireless!). The next day, Moab and Arches and much of the surrounding lowland was socked in with inversion fog. The view from Dead Horse Point, usually a breathtaking dropoff of redrock convolutions, looked more like a sea. (The Sierra La Sals are in the background here, too.)

The Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands was much clearer, though, as this view from Mesa Arch shows. You can see the La Sals, Washerwoman arch (though it's hard to make out), and a bit of creeping fog. I took a "family portrait" of my dad and me here, which my uncle does from this spot with his family every year or so, and [livejournal.com profile] dag29580863 and I did last year.

So when are we going down to Moab? Aren’t I in your family? ;) Looks wonderful down there, though I have question - where does the inversion come from in Arches, from Moab? Is it that close?

Aww, sorry. :~) We should go again, and camp in that cool spot when it's not covered with snow.

Arches is very close to Moab, but the fog extended all the way to the Book Cliffs! It was pretty amazing. It's all a big basin there - and inversions just have to do with basins, not pollution or populated areas. (It's just that in populated areas, inversions also trap pollution.)
